Before you leave the abandoned house

The demo opens with a quest called Look Around, and it is not a formality. The house contains metal plates and rope, both of which come back later in repair recipes, plus the axe you will need for coral harvesting. Search the containers before you walk out the door.

The radio is the actual gate. You hear a voice but cannot answer until you tune it — the dials are physical, not a menu, and you adjust them until the signal resolves. The caller points you west, toward a trading post. Board the motorboat and follow the marker.

Two things to resist on that first crossing. Do not stop for every floating barrel; you have no storage and no reason yet. And do not try to fish before you have a rod — the first rod is given to you at the post, not found in the house.

Trade your debt at Betsy and Sons

The trading post is the shop on the giant crab legs, marked Betsy and Sons. Inside, Gill and Bozur explain the state of the water and offer you a dose of Essence for your Blight exposure.

Accept it. It is not optional in any meaningful sense, but understand what it is: a loan. The traders book the cost against you, which is the narrative reason every subsequent errand exists. They then hand you a bunkhouse key and tell you to rest before your first assignment.

Take your chest from the pier and carry it to the bunkhouse. Inside, place it in its spot. Then look at the wall: there is a large opening, and the room is not secure. Pick up the repair material in the room and patch it before you touch the bed. Skipping the repair leaves you unable to sleep, which is the most common early stall in the demo.

Sleep. The night advances to morning and the first fishing assignment arrives.

The five-Snapper contract

Your first job is to catch five Snappers for Gill and Bozur. Collect the Simple Rod before you leave the bunkhouse — it is easy to walk past — and head to the fishing platform behind the dry dock.

Snappers take earthworms, the starter bait, and they are present at the spot nearest the trading post. The Simple Rod is entirely sufficient; this contract is not a gear check. It is a tutorial for the fishing fight, which is built around pulling against the fish rather than holding one button. The fishing guide covers the tension and stamina systems in detail, and the bait guide explains the spot panel.

Do not process or sell the contract fish before delivering them. Keep five in the hold and hand them over.

Once the contract closes, the traders point you at the local engineer, John the Fifth, who holds the key to the dry dock.

Repairing the moonshine still

John will not hand over the key while his still is broken, and the still is broken in two ways.

First, something is lodged inside it: a prosthetic leg. Remove it. It is a joke, but it is also a required interaction.

Second, the still needs materials. John sends you out for three things:

Material Where to get it Tool
Coral fiber Angler's Island — harvest the coral growths Axe
Bug slime From creatures and salvage around the islands Weapons, hook gun
Metal plates Containers and wreckage, plus the abandoned house Hook gun

Angler's Island is the trip that matters. Sail there, go ashore, and use the axe on the coral. If you have been ignoring the hook gun, this is the point where it becomes essential: floating crates and submerged salvage are pulled in with it, not picked up by hand. The controls page has the binding if you have not used it yet.

Return with everything, repair the still, and John gives you the dry dock key.

Opening the dry dock and repairing the boat

The dry dock is the large building next to the water, and it has its own problem: the equipment is dead when you first enter. Follow the repair sequence inside rather than sailing off in search of another key — the fix is on site.

Once the dock works, the boat needs two things before it is seaworthy: polyps removed from the hull and hull damage repaired. Both are interaction jobs, not menu purchases, and both are worth doing carefully because the next objectives build on them.

Then comes the part that stops most players: John wants the boat reinforced and its original engine replaced.

Hull protection requires a crafted material made from three Softgrazers, which process into Chromatic Scales. Softgrazers are not the fish you have been catching for the contract; check the spot panel for which water holds them, and expect to spend a few casts finding three.

The upgraded engine requires a carburetor. To unlock it, complete the traders' Harpooner contract — three Harpooners. When you deliver them, the carburetor becomes available, not owned: go back to Gill and Bozur's shop and buy it for 50 in-game currency. This is the single most common "I finished the contract and nothing happened" moment in the demo.

Install both parts at the dry dock. If a component crafted successfully but the objective will not close, check storage — an uninstalled part does not count.

Getting through The Throat

With hull protection and the new engine fitted, you can attempt The Throat, the gate that ends the demo.

The gate is a machine, not a lock. Start the generator, then repair the waterway machinery. Both water wheels have to be turning before the channel controls will respond. If the objective says the machinery is damaged, keep repairing; if it says to configure the water flow, you are at the channel controls and the wheels are already running.

When the gate opens, sail through. That is the end of the demo — the build stops rather than continuing into the launch region, which is why nothing carries over to the Early Access version. The demo comparison explains what changes at launch.

If you get stuck

Almost every stall in this demo is one of five things, in rough order of frequency:

  1. The wall in the bunkhouse is not repaired, so the bed will not work.
  2. The carburetor was never purchased after the Harpooner contract.
  3. A crafted component is in storage, not installed at the dry dock.
  4. The contract fish were sold or processed instead of delivered.
  5. Only one water wheel is running at The Throat.

Read the journal objective before sailing anywhere. It names the blocking step, and in this build the objective text is more reliable than the map marker.

If you want a broader plan rather than a quest chain — what to spend torn pages on, when to upgrade storage, how to survive the first night out — the beginner guide covers the first hour in that order.
